Beneath the Covers
The Psychic Temple is in the process of being resurfaced–at least where there are cracks. I never noticed the starfish-shaped plates (above) before… Meanwhile, the front has been covered up even more. It turns out sandblasting was scheduled to occur this afternoon. Neighbors, bear with us. The noisy process should end tomorrow.

Christmas wrapping
The Psychic Temple’s historic facade is now covered and prepped for restoration. Sadly, it won’t be ready to open up on Christmas…

Surfaces
The side walls are being prepared for resurfacing. Below is a closeup. The opposite side is being cleaned up and filled as well. The facade has yet to be covered by scaffolding. Maybe next week. Meanwhile, the top floor still looks magnificent.

Less light, more drama
What’s behind the boarded-up windows? Glowing, freshly sandblasted wood on the top floor. Less light and more drama on the third floor. Scaffolding next week.

Sand people!
As evidenced by the deafening roar through covered windows, the Psychic Temple’s interior was being sandblasted today. Not having goggles or a mask, I didn’t venture past the first floor… …but we should have pretty good pictures next week!

In that spirit, here are some views from the Psychic Temple. Can you smell the evergreens? And the sawdust? Happy holidays but don’t forget to…

Construction update with gratuitous photo of someone working in a dumpster
The Psychic Temple’s facade is being prepared for its facelift. The wood barriers have been brought in to allow for work and layers of tile and other materials are being stripped to expose the original bricks. The decorative central pillars are also being exposed, although the first floor isn’t considered historical and will not receive…

The Doors (and Windows)
Yesterday morning, I checked out photographer Jim Coke’s Jim Morrison mural off Fourth and Linden. It’s right across the street from Fingerprints Music, where there’s a more comprehensive display of Coke’s photos including some taken in the weeks leading up to The Doors’ “Light My Fire” charting at No. 1. For contact information regarding the…

Posts, Beams
The recent work on the Psychic Temple isn’t apparent unless you look upward. On the top floor you can see new beams, and some of the skylights have been covered up as well. Sturdy new beams as well as posts are visible on the second floor, too. Check out all the reinforcements and brackets. Meanwhile,…

Meet Brandon Shigeta
As soon as I learned that architect, designer, and Hypebeast contributor Brandon Shigeta would be working on the Psychic Temple, I sent an introductory email. So after our paths have crisscrossed throughout our respective careers, we finally met this morning at the site to catch up and have some post-Red Bull (for him) and post-coffee (for…
