The door is now open to the Psychic Temple
After years of planning, renovating, and getting up to code, the door to the Psychic Temple finally opened for business today. The second-oldest commercial building in Long Beach has been gutted, reinforced, retrofitted, and turned into a state-of-the-art creative office. The building’s old bones go well with computers, buffered by plenty of artwork. The fhird-floor…

Meanwhile, back at The Edison…
Most of the improvements to the Psychic Temple are currently taking place on paper or underground. But what’s going on across the street at the Edison? The venue has been down since 2006 or 2007, but came back to life last year when Imprint hosted its Long Beach: Work in Progress event. The stage and…

Psychic Temple Update (June 6, 2014)
I was able to enter the Psychic Temple today and the structural work is close to being finished. Just a few more details to go, such as the fire escapes and main entry… Now the sidewalks are being torn up to install new electrical, plumbing, etc. Pretty soon it will be a great place to…

Psychic Temple Update (May 27, 2014)
Brand new windows, sconces, and surfacing–the exterior of the Psychic Temple is looking handsome. Business in the back, party in the front
The work site was closed today, so I climbed on the barrier and took a picture of the cleaned-up first floor over the wall. The new glass looks spectacular. Kind of like an anti-mullet, the Psychic Temple is party in the front, business in the back.

Seamless and shiny
Brand-new windows are being installed on the first floor, breathing new life into the Psychic Temple and providing contrast to the cleaned-up and matched-up bricks and mortar as well. The seamless and shiny additions will continue on top and and in between…

Frontside, backside, stairs
The street level of the façade is being embellished, with cleaned-up bricks and I-beams as well as sections of glass and stone (that will match the original keystones) on the way. Views of the same surface from the inside, west… …to east. Meanwhile, the upstairs is on hold. Hi!

Clean
Since all of the structural work is finished and efforts are being concentrated on the façade and exteriors, the floors are about as wide open as you’ll ever see them. The view from the stairs going up to the second floor. The second floor isn’t really this dark. Stairs to the third floor. (No, the…

Surfaces, sounds
Stopped by the Psychic Temple today and the canvas still covers its façade–but not for long. The plaster is being surfaced by the entrances. The ledges have already been plastered. The bricks are freshly sand-blasted and water sealed. Detail work continues and the sconces go up next week. Meanwhile, a Makita sound system propels the…
