Meet Brandon Shigeta
As soon as I learned that architect, designer, and Hypebeast contributor Brandon Shigeta would be working on the Psychic Temple, I sent an introductory email. So after our paths have crisscrossed throughout our respective careers, we finally met this morning at the site to catch up and have some post-Red Bull (for him) and post-coffee (for…

Beaming
Construction continues on the beams beneath the floorboards. It began near the facade and is working its way back. A better view of an exposed beam from the outside. Back inside. And down below. Still so much do to…

Face Lifts
While work continues in its basement and on the foundation, the Psychic Temple is getting some facework done. I’ll miss that pink door, which complements the trashcan and cords so nicely. Foundation Being Formed
Yesterday, the Psychic Temple’s foundation was being prepared for pouring. Lots of digging around, adding of rebar, and reinforcing to build upward. Views from the basement. Plans being made, floor being dug up and cleared out. View from the ground floor. The holes may be filled by now!

Internal Affairs
From the exterior, Psychic Temple doesn’t look much different than it did weeks ago. But the building is being transformed starting with the interior. And underneath. The foundation has been shored up and new restraining walls have been erected in the basement. Most notably on the ground floor, the entries (the side-by-side doorways below) have…

Peace on Earth and Long Beach
It’s December and the holiday spirit emanates from the Psychic Temple, rain or shine. Or at least it hangs on the nearby lampposts. Peace on Earth and Long Beach, too.

Psychic Coverage
Last week’s Psychic Temple’s launch event attracted some serious coverage, including NBC TV in Los Angeles. A business moving offices isn’t typically newsworthy, but the renovation and resuscitation of the second-oldest commercial building in Long Beach is a big deal. Sadly, I don’t have links to many of the articles. Most were scanned from actual…

Psychic Temple + Wheat Paste = Win
The Long Beach Fencing Club’s winning concept for the Design a Fence contest is streetwise, inexpensive, and flexible. The use of wheat paste is also brilliant because it flips a medium that is best known for illegal advertising, revolutionary politics, and street art. What has become synonymous for rebellious expression on someone else’s wall is…
